Meet 2017 new Council members

Professor Kichu Nair

The Medical Council of NSW has welcomed four new members.

Last month, the NSW Governor announced the appointment of Dr Merran Auland, Ms Maria Cosmidis, Professor Cameron Stewart and Professor Kichu Nair (pictured above). Their diverse backgrounds will enhance the ability of the 19-member Council to uphold community safety by ensuring doctors are fit to practise medicine and the trust and confidence of the profession with the community.

As a GP in the far Western town of Nyngan, Dr Auland brings unique insights into the challenges of practising rural and remote medicine. Ms Cosmidis is a social worker with a background in multicultural communities and the not for profit sector while Professor Stewart is an expert in health ethics at the University of Sydney. An international medical graduate, Professor Nair is a medical educator who has extensive experience in geriatric medicine .

The appointments follow the end of the terms of former Council members Ms Lorraine Poulos and Clinical Associate Professor  Stephen Adelstein. Two vacancies were also created earlier this year by the resignations of Ms Narelle Bell and Professor Cheryl Jones, who both moved interstate.

Council President Dr Greg Kesby welcomed the new members and thanked the outgoing members for their contribution.
